Preserving the past, shaping the future

The Pedestrian Forum

oundation

Foundation

The Farnborough Society has set up a steering group with a view to establishing a Pedestrian Forum to champion the cause of the pedestrian, campaign on his behalf, as well as promoting walking as a healthy, practical and invigorating way of getting around our town. We shall survey popular walking routes both in the centre of our town and in the surrounding built up areas, and suggest ways that these could be improved to make walking around Farnborough a more pleasant pastime. Whenever opportunity presents, we shall contribute to public consultations that affect the walker in Farnborough, shall lobby both at local and county level for possible improvements to pavements, walk ways and road crossings, and work towards establishing ourselves as a stakeholder in any future consultations on local transport.

In these days of congested roads, expensive motoring, and the need to combat climate change, we feel it makes sense to promote and encourage walking in our borough. By increasing the pleasantness and convenience of pedestrian routes we believe we can persuade more of our local citizens to increase the number of journeys they choose to make on foot - after all, walking is the primary mode of all means of human transport.

We are not partisan in our approach, and realise that all of the various transport groups, including motorists and cyclist, as well as pedestrians, need to fit into our urban ‘street-scape’.  The motorist, after parking the car, becomes a pedestrian when wandering around the town centre doing the shopping. This integration of the various modes of transport into a crowded town centre is a theme we shall continually return to.

Activities

We intend to hold regular and friendly meetings at which we shall discuss local campaigning, with opportunity for members to raise their concerns about problems they have encountered and improvements that they would like to see, as pedestrians. We shall take a keen interest in current ‘good practice’ in the design of urban streets, and in addition, we shall present any interesting and novel pedestrian schemes that we have heard about, both elsewhere in the British Isles and abroad.   We also hope a good percentage of our activity will be devoted to outdoor surveys of local pedestrian routes, as we believe that routes are best understood by walking along them, rather than by just looking at maps in a meeting room.

We shall also introduce a number of social events consisting of urban walks where we stroll around areas of Farnborough, either discussing local history or architecture or gardens, or just as a way of friends meeting together for a chat.
