Allotment Tour
Have you ever walked past an allotment and wondered why so many people love to grow their own fruit and vegetables? There are many benefits: fresh air, exercise, organic produce, choice of varieties, complete control over the whole growing process and the satisfaction of producing top quality food. Freshly picked produce really does taste better—without damaging the environment.
Allotment gardening is enjoying a huge resurgence of interest. Perhaps you saw Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s River Cottage Spring, in which he challenged families in Bristol to take on an allotment, and wondered whether anything similar was taking place locally.
Farnborough has several areas of allotments, all hives of activity, and May is the perfect time of year to check them out. Jacqui Dawkins, Rushmoor Borough Council’s Allotments Officer, and Laura Somers, Community Development Officer, will lead a tour of some of the best allotments in the town, sharing their considerable knowledge and answering questions. It’s the perfect opportunity to discover what gardening enthusiasts are achieving right here in town.
