Open Meeting - Planning Group 03/07/08

1. Rushmoor Plan

This is an opportune time for establishing a society as the process to replace the existing local plan is at an early stage. Consultation will commence shortly on the main issues to be included in the plan. The new plan will be a comprehensive one covering housing, business and employment, the airport, parks and the environment.

The Society needs to take an active part in the development of the plan and the RBC Chief Executive has offered the assistance of officers to the Society.

2. Planning applications

The town has seen some good architecture in recent years including the conservation of historic buildings on the former RAE.

But not all proposals are good. There is a current proposal to keep the former Midland Bank building and refurbish the exterior. The Society has objected to this proposal as it will do very little to improve the gateway to the Town Centre. Retention of the building will not give a good impression to visitors to the town.

3. A new Town Square

The council has recently approved a long term plan for the improvement and further development of the centre. This includes a new Civic Quarter in the area of the existing library, the society is of the view that there is an opportunity to have a Town Square to accommodate cultural and community facilities and intends put forward detailed proposals to this end.

4. Transport

Farnborough is relatively flat but shops and work places are spread apart and therefore not within reach on foot. In the future, cycling will be of greater importance.

The group has started a review of cycle facilities in the town with the intention of putting forward ideas which will to lead to a joined up approach and form a network of cycle paths.
